This volume is loosely based on the presentations given at a symposium of the same title organised by Doug Yen for the 15th Pacific Science Congress in Dunedin, New Zealand, in February 1983. The symposium formed part of the archaeological sessions of the Congress, which also constituted the 11 th Congress of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association.
