In this study, an attempt is made to investigate and identify the
most important predictors of family size preferences in Pakistan. The
analysis is based on cross-sectional data of 9416 currently married
women under age 50 from a national survey in 1979-80.
The findings of the analysis suggest that having sons in the
family was the principal predictor, particularly for desired family
