The increasingly voluminous body of literature on the economic problems of underdeveloped countries reflects the fundamental change in the international political situation since the Second World War, and also the growing awareness by advanced nations of the need to help reduce--if not eliminate— the gap in the living standards between rich and poor nations. Underdeveloped countries too have shown a greater desire to increase their material wellbeing and this is reflected in the popularity of development planning and other concerted programmes designed to accelerate economic growth.
