The background to this thesis was in work undertaken by the author in
1982/83 in collaboration with Dr. Paul Jorion, then of the Department of
Social Anthropology at Cambridge University. This work entailed the
development of techniques for the computer analysis of genealogies,
looking specifically for genealogical relationships between spouses, and so
a detailed analysis of an extensive body of genealogical data provided a
logical topic for thesis research.
