Title: Staff at opening of 74 inch telescope at Mt Stromlo
Author(s): Photographer: not known
The 74-inch telescope was the Observatory's primary research instrument throughout its lifetime. As the most advanced and largest telescope at the site, its completion in 1955 was critical to Mt Stromlo's shift from solar to stellar astronomy. The telescope was destroyed in the 2003 firestorm, but remains in situ. Pictured in this photograph are Kurt Gottlieb (standing - sixth from left) and Director Bart Bok (standing - last on far right).
