My research explores the influence of context on the interpretation and artistic potential of the hand made ceramic vessel. My process has involved making a variety of objects and reflecting upon them within the context of two specific environments: the restaurant and the art gallery. Working in collaboration with two restaurants in Canberra, I explored the relationship between the Slow Movement and contemporary hand made ceramics. Making work for the art gallery context, I sought to challenge the traditional concepts of ʻfunctionʼ and ʻuseʼ by abstracting familiar tableware forms and surfaces. The restaurant and art gallery contexts offer different and unique qualities that influence meaning and creative potential of the ceramic vessel. My research investigates what is gained and what is lost in tailoring work for these two environments.
