Use of surrogates in medicine: ideas that may be useful for ecology

Surrogates are used extensively in clinical medicine. it is important that a thorough understanding be established of the relationship between intervention, surrogate and outcome. We outline some key ideas from clinical medicine and how they might be used to inform surrogates in ecology.
