Abstract

This chapter outlines a relational approach to communicating about climate change. It highlights the social aspects of communication which sit alongside informational aspects and shape how communications are received. The chapter outlines the social identity approach as a theoretical framework to helpfully guide effective communication on climate change, by highlighting the 'us and them' dynamics at play in communication. Strategies for adopting a relational approach to climate change communication are proposed, including a focus on in-group messaging and navigation of inter-group divisions.
