As UN agencies and governments rush to ameliorate harms from the withdrawal of the US Government from WHO, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Paris Agreement, powerful private actors are embedding themselves further into global climate and health governance. In January, 2025, Bloomberg Philanthropies pledged support to the UNFCCC following the Trump administration's announced exit. 2 The Gates Foundation of technology centibillionaire Bill Gates is already the second largest donor to WHO. Arguably, support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and The Gates Foundation could provide a short-term fix to the funding deficit that has arisen due to Trump's administration. Is support from US-based philanthropists any different to the US Government, as they maintain the same US hegemony? I am a member of the WHO Advisory Group for the World Report on the Social Determinants of Health Equity and the WHO Editorial Board for the Global Report on the Commercial Determinants of Health; and have received grants from the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council.en
