Abstract

In Chinese historical writing – as in the West – the role of women is often neglected. Some leading figures cannot be ignored, such as the Empress Wu of Tang and the Cixi Empress-Dowager of Qing, while others, like Yang Guifei, provide a footnote of romance or tragedy in the chronicles of politics and power. For the most part, however, the standard histories of China prefer to leave women behind a screen, and it is only in exceptional circumstances that their qualities, their ambitions and their influence are properly described

Description

This work was first published in the journal Papers on Far Eastern History 12 (September 1975), at the Australian National University, Canberra, pages 1 to 42. Though the essential material and argument of the article remains the same, I have made substantial adjustments and amendments, citing some publications since 1975 to supplement or replace the original references, with additional footnotes and appropriate renumbering. Official titles follow my adaptation of Dubs/Bielenstein
