Abstract
Using the Haitian coffee industry as an example, this paper illustrates two differing approaches to social science research: one, using a broadly defined approach to economic analysis which considers economic and social relationships as well as institutions in examining the competitiveness of the sector's export market and a second, more limited in scope, which addresses the issue from solely an economic viewpoint. The authors conclude that by broadening the framework of economic analysis to consider the role of economic relationships and institutions, one may reduce the possibility of forming erroneous conclusions.
