Abstract

This paper analyses the system by which joint stock limited liability companies were registered in Indonesia in order to establish how many Chinese enterprises existed in Indonesia since the 19th century. It finds that the 1847 Law on Commerce established a system of company registration that – despite modifications – persisted until today. It was applied to Chinese firms, but only since the 1890s did their owners register and incorporate them as limited liability firms. Their number increased rapidly and peaked at around 850 during 1920-1925. Economic downturns and a generation change reduced their numbers to 450 by 1940. During the 1940s-1970s, Chinese entrepreneurs experienced mixed fortunes, until the largest Chinese enterprises in Indonesia emerged during the 1980s in a new configuration - the business group - that persists until today. These were joined since especially 2010 by at least 1,000 subsidiary companies of multinational enterprises located in China. Show more
