Abstract
Discussion Paper No.87 discussed regulation and the consequences
of the Commonwealth largely withdrawing from economic regulation
of the air freight market.
Having regard to the changed and more competitive economic
environment, this paper examines the prospects for the air
freight industry in the 1983-90 period.
Growth projections are based on recent Government and private
sector economic scenarios and assume no further changes in
regulatory policies as well as no significant change in the
competitive relationships with other competing modes of
transport.
The underlying factors and prospects for each air freight market
sector are considered. The various market sectors are then
summated to provide projected total growth rates for the industry
as a whole.
In the conclusions, the paper notes that the growth prospects
of the industry are very encouraging in the next three years and
up to 1990 are significantly better than the average growth rate
in the last decade. The beneficial effects of the more
competitive environment are being shared by the industry and the
public. Generally, however, prospects in the short term for new
entrants do not appear bright.
