Twenty-two experiments were performed on the stability of flows in Hele-Shaw cells. Two different liquids were used and the pressure gradient behind the wetting front was suddenly changed by three different methods. The experiments confirmed a recent theoretical analysis. Modified theory taking account of microscopic interface geometry predicts wavelengths of fingering in soil about twice as great as does the original theory.en
