Abstract

Transient-field precessions were measured following projectile Coulomb excitation of 24Mg(21+). We conclude that (i) the transient field for Mg in Fe decreases markedly with increasing Mg velocities above 7ν0 due to a diminished efficiency for transfer of polarization to the moving ion, and (ii) the present results contradict earlier evidence for momentary losses in ferromagnetism purported to occur when heavy beams are used for excitation.
