Abstract

John Dring (1902-1991) served in the Indian Political Service in the North West Frontier Province of British India from 1927 to 1948, having previously served for four years in British Infantry and Cavalry units in the same province. After the Partition of India, he was appointed Prime Minister of the princely state of Bahawalpur (1948-1952), which eventually became part of Pakistan. In 1972 he was interviewed by Charles Allen of the BBC as part of his radio program 'Plain Tales of the Raj'. This document is a transcription of that interview taken from tapes digitised by the British Library, annotated with explanations of some local terms and abbreviations, and brief historical background to some anecdotes.
