Here is a Zen monk preparing tea for the tea ceremony. The water is heated in the iron kettle sitting over a charcoal fire set in sand on the floor. He takes the powdered tea from the cup in his hand and places it in the grey bowl at his right, then he uses the bamboo dipper to put the hot water in the tea bowl, and beats it with the bamboo whisk which is seen in front of the darker bowl on his right. The tea bowls are works of art, each one handmade and unique. The ceremony is stylized, unhurried, an expression of a disciplined and tranquil way of life.
