This stupa was built at Sarnath, near Banaras: where the Buddha preached his first sermon, setting in motion the Wheel of the Law. Some say that this stupa marks the spot where the Buddha first announced the coming of Buddha Maitreya. In the foreground are seen a group of Tibetan pilgrims. Nearby is the spot where the first sermon was delivered, marked by the remains of an Asokan pillar.
