Abstract

Description

Many of the niche figures to be convincing stone 'actors' set in miniature stages, for their undercutting is so deep that most are practically free-standing pieces. Though we are witnessing a battle in this present example, the figures look more like dancers than combatants. Their movements are graceful, and a clever use of light and shadow assists in making their movemenets entirely three-dimensional. This is characteristic of the sculpture at the Kailasnath [sic] Temple, which is conceived somewhat in the fashion of the greatest Baroque sculptures of Europe, which also belied the material significance of the medium in which they were rendered.
