Abstract

Description

This photograph was taken at the Bulong longhouse, 142. 19 E. 5. 49 S. Universal grid reference 54M XU454573 (1: 100 000 Karoma map sheet 7386). Photographer's note: Fire can be made in 30 to 40 seconds by vigorously sawing a loop of cane back and forth around a split hardwood fire-stick. The fire-stick is held on a pad of tinder beneath the fire-makers foot. Smouldering sawdust drops onto the tinder, which is gently blown into ignition.
