dc.descriptionAs this reconstruction mural shows, the city of Mohenjo-daro like Harappa was a planned fortified city bounded by a great rampart wall on a broad foundation of mud-brick measuring some forty-five feet wide, Large city gates were periodically allowed to break the continuity of the walls in front of which and surrounding the entire city proper was a moat fed by the Indus and the Ravi tributary, The town inside was divided by broad streets regularly running at right angles, east-west and north-south in a grid pattern, The plan for these was evidently preserved over the entire period of the city's existence because from the lowest levels of the foundations to the upper stratifications, the shapes of the buildings clearly remain the same, There are, however, some deviations in later forms of civic buildings throughout time, Many of the houses were constructed in two stories, somewhat like apartments, in order to house more of the population in less space, The masonry was plain and undecorated to the most extent with only occasional examples of alabaster or potter [sic] grilles for windows,en_AU
