Description

A much livelier character is found in this relief of a battling warrior and his fantastic beast from Sarnath, where the sculptural tastes of the region remained at a fairly high level over many centuries from the time of King Asoka until this date, the 5th Century A.D. More ingenuity is evidenced in the composition illustrated here than in the previous example even though the subject matter is indeed more trivial, Mounted warriors or guards are common sights in the decoration of stupas, as for example at the Great Stupa at Sanchi, where they usually face the entrances or gateways like heraldic courtiers,
