Abstract

Description

The dark green field, with yellowish clumps of grass, is subtly shaded in order to suggest the uneven surface. The figures are tall & slender in scale in relation to the total size of the picture. Brushwork throughout is extremely fine, more exquisite than in almost any other miniature in the manuscript and particularly noticeable in the delicate & soft drawing of the faces. Movement is also handled with masterly skill, the painting embodying all the ideal qualities one naturally associates with the miniaturist's art. At the bottom is an inscription assigning the picture to Daswanth. The picture is particularly important as it is the only known work painted by Daswanth working without the collaboration of any other artist -- Folio 32 verso.
