Abstract

Description

The most ancient monument of Khajuraho. Although called a temple it may never have been one. Consists of a very high granite platform set around with staircases. Around it are arranged 65 small cells, set side by side and facing inwards. The monument is called Chaunsath Yogini because the no. corresponds to the no. of Kali's female servants, of whom 3 statues were found on the site. The platform may have been a meeting place. In the middle of the south-western series lies a larger cell
perhaps it was before this that the king took up his position. Cannot be dated precisely, but it is clear that it is earlier than the other temples.
