Abstract

Description

Photographer's note: The waters of the Nali enter cave systems via dolines on the plateau and the river resurges in the bottom of the huge collapsed doline at the foot of the Muller escarpment. It has breached the south-western wall of the doline and flows a short distance to join the south branch of the Burnett (Djalo/ Dio) River before entering the Strickland River. Other routes into Febi territory (used by patrols) from the Highlands were through Bogaia land from the north via the Tumbudu and Bulago valleys. Another route (apparently to and from the Huli sacred site at Gelote in the east) was via the Ialuba Valley and over the Karius Range SE of the Lavani Valley. This photograph was taken from approximately above the Western-Hela provincial border with the aid of pilot Rob Willis-Jones, Missionary Aviation Fellowship, Tari, Southern Highlands (now Hela) Province.
