Abstract

Description

This photograph was taken at Koroba Provincial High School, via Koroba, Southern Highlands (now Hela) Province, Papua New Guinea. These headdresses are generally used by the Febi in dances relating to curing a sick person or protecting the community. Variations of White (Sulphur-crested) cockatoo-feather headdresses occur from the Torres Strait islands in Australia, throughout the Fly-Strickland catchment - to the Oksapmin people on the upper Strickland to the north and east to the Fasu people near Lake Kutubu. The feathers are said attract and reflect light from flaming torches and fires, as dancers perform inside longhouses at night, enhancing movement and beauty.
