Description
Son of Siva and Parvati. Bringer of wealth and prosperity, he is particularly worshipped by merchants and businessmen. There are various versions of how he obtained his elephant-head. (See Walker, Hindu World, s.v. or any other text on Hindu mythology). Note the rat at the bottom left, which is his vahana or mount. In his lower proper left hand is a modaka, a ball of sweetened rice boiled in milk, which is his favourite food. Ganesa is also the patron deity of learning and writing, which in some legends he is said to have invented.
