Nainsukh was the younger brother of the painter Manak (or Manaku) who came from Guler and illustrated the Gita Govinda in a style combining the hot magnificence of previous Basohli painting with greater simplification, muted ferocity and milder naturalism. Beetle-wing cases, however, were still used for emeralds and his pictures glow and flash with Basohliesque bravura. Nainsukh may have presided over this fifth Basohli Bhagavata Purana. Two influences: 1. Manaku's, whose Gita Govinda series provides in places the exact models for pictures in this B.P., probably through his eldest son, Fattu, who may conceivably have absorbed his father's early technique and applied himself to the new project. 2. Traces of Nainsukh's style of relaxed portraiture and unique idioms. Likely, Fattu further diluted Manaku's Gita gov. style with Guler naturalism. At the same time, Nainsukh may well have proffered sage advice and even undertaken certain tours de force. This picture is typical of fattu and is a logical development of his father's G.G. -- 9 x 13 inches.
