Description

These ruins mark the site of the ancient Nalanda University, not far from Rajgir, some sixty miles from Patna. For centuries it was the greatest center of Buddhist learning, with thousands of students from all Buddhist sects studying there. It was destroyed by Muslim invaders, and is now being rebuilt as a center for Buddhist study, aided by the Indian government. In the foreground is Bhikku Kashyap, one of the leading Buddhist scholars of modern times, the head of the new Buddhist Institute at Nalanda, and the author of the first chapter in THE PATH OF THE BUDDHA.
