The waterfront dispute of 1951 was the biggest industrial confrontation in New Zealand’s history. At its peak, 22,000 waterside workers (wharfies) and other unionists were off the job. The dispute, which lasted 151 days - from 13 February to 15 July 1951 - brought the nation’s wharves to a complete stand still.en_AU
