Abstract

Description

Photographer's note: Febis take every opportunity to hunt and gather food as they travel. Walking through the rainforest with the Febi’s in their own environment was an educational experience. Progress was constantly slowed by diversions to hunt, or to collect or check on forest resources. Wild pig and cassowary tracks were examined, fish were shot in shallow pools: crayfish were gathered from streams, and wood-boring grubs extracted from rotten sago logs. For a snack the top shoots or 'heart' of young wild pandanus trees were cut and shared. Considerable time was spent trying to extract a possum from a tree involving one man making 'possum noises' while another climbed the tree. Ferns, edible leaves, mushrooms, marita (red pandanus fruit), megapod (bush-fowl) eggs, bush vines and various insects were collected along the way. This photograph was taken near the resurgence of the north branch of the Liddle (Dogomo) River (marked as ‘rapids’ on 1: 100 000 Karoma map sheet 7386). Universal grid reference: 54M XU454573.
