Abstract

Description

This Temple of Chitragupta is built on the structural pattern of the main Lakshmana Temple, with a solidified sikhara surmounting a broad base and a triple set of porches radiating from its lower level. The most significant difference lies in the tapering of the former tower, whereas the latter was broadened by the rising secondary sikharas spread about its middle levels. By combining solidity with tapering, the temple takes on the appearance of a bundle of tree trunks, lashed at the base. The particular color of the stone used, though still largely a sandstone material, adds to this lashed-in effect: notice the bands of greenish-gray stone showing through the patina of the lighter surface. -- Chitragupta Temple from west. Built in reign of Dhanga.
