View of Bendigo, from road to Eagle Hawk, Victoria

Abstract

Roadside scene of a smith and his smithy, travellers and various animals. Two carts head off towards mostly flat land in the distance where there can be seen groups of people on the diggings, scattered buildings and tent encampments. The four men on the left hand side of the road are bare-footed and two wear coolie hats. The smith attends to a horse and carries a basket and hammer while a man leans against a wall smoking a pipe. There are two signs on the smithy. One says; Blower/ General Smith, and the other depicts a flag and is inscribed; Liverpool/ Bomfravid. There are pigs, poultry and a dog in the scene and a wheel leans against the smithy wall. In 1855, when Gill sketched this scene the alluvial gold mining at Bendigo was on the decline. Show more
