Abstract

Description

The Hoysala king Visnuvardhana caused it to be erected in 1117 by a one-armed architect whose name has been preserved. At least, such is the legend, but his name is not found in any inscription. It is a vast pavilion open to the east and west whose roof is supported by numerous pillars, all of different shapes. The outer pillars were joined some years later by screens with holes pierced through them. The tower which used to be over the hall was repaired several times and was finally demolished about 1888.
