The sacred Bodhi tree at Buddhagaya where the Buddha attained Enlightenment. It is said that the original Bodhi tree sprang up here on the day of the Buddha's birth. Sasanka, at [sic] Hindu of Bengal, is said to have had the original tree cut down, but another tree rose from the roots. In 1870, when Cunningham was repairing the temple, the tree fell down, but he had a sapling from it planted in the original spot.
