Abstract
Description
A new trend in architectural styles is begun with the Durga Temple at Aihole where temple building works its way into the area of true sculpture and yet remains a serviceable structure in the process, The apsidal ending of the Durga temple shows an influence from the Buddhist chaitya halls, but its ambulatory is on the exterior rather than the interior, Beneath the structure is a raised platform: the first of its kind in Indian temple architecture: [that] will continue to be part of temple formulas in more elaborate forms later on, A rudimentary tower is constructed over the apse of this building, the most characteristic feature of it being the extensive decoration it displays, This tower aids in distinguishing the temple as sculpture and shrine in one, A porch is present at the entrance, just visible to the left of the slide, and the roof is at present flat: a single stone covering the entire building,
