dc.description.abstractJames Spicer joined the first Typographical Association in 1866. He was elected President in 1901 and held that position for four years, having previously been Vice-President for several terms. For 17 years he was a delegate to the Printing Trades Federation Council and for 14 years was President of that body. He was a delegate on the Eight-Hour Committee for six years and held successively the posts of Vice-President and President. He represented the Association for 12 years on the Labour Council but declined nomination to the chair. For 18 years he was the delegate to the PLL Conferences. He was a member of the Executive of the Trades Hall Association for 22 years and for a term held the office of President. He was a Land Trustee in connection with Sydney's great Trades Hall and in recognition of his worth and ability he was appointed by the Government as a Director of Sydney Hospital. Mr Spicer was a foundation member of the Political Labour Movement and Treasurer of the first Redfern Labour Electoral League. He was nominated for selection to contest the seat in Parliament in 1891, but declined to stand. (ref. Printing Trades Journal, 21 August 1917, p. 8)en_US
