Abstract

Description

The outer surface of this chased golden bowl is decorated in concentric bands. The lowest strip with gazelles or goats surrounds the central rosette. In the second strip, two bulls, two lions, palmette trees and hanging pomegranates can be recognised and in the top strip between hybrid creatures, there is a lively hunting scene : two men with dagger and lance slaying a lion. Numerous iconographical details have been borrowed from Egyptian art, some features in the composition of the hunting scene are reminiscent of Aegean traditions. In contrast to other works, this shows the influence of neighbouring western and southern area which are especially noticeable in Middle Syrian handicrafts. -- d : 17.5 cm (Aleppo Museum).
