Abstract

Photograph of the inside of a timber lined railway carriage equipped for train repairs. The van has timber ceiling ribs as well as timber walls and floors. Chain loops hang from the ceiling and there are hooks and brackets on the walls for easy access to tools. The equipment includes a work bench with a vice, spanners, crowbars, augers, lamps and ropes. William Ellis was examining fitter and fitter in charge of the accident train for thirteen years. During that time he examined thousands of engines and attended hundreds of derailments and other accidents.
