Abstract
Description
The interiors of temples are in marked contrast with the plainness of the exteriors. No two pillars seem alike, and many are ornamented to an almost fantastic extent. This seems an indication of their descent from a wooden original. Their massiveness is an excess that people accustomed to wooden architecture might employ when first replacing in stone supports which in wood would have appeared necessary to carry a heavy stone roofs.
