Item Embargo 1,2,3 Gallery 9 (2015)(Gallery 9) Alwast, PeterIn 1972 Gerhard Richter declared that he was making ‘photography’ by other means, confounding the relationship between painting and photography. While much work has focused on the interplay of painting and photography, Peter Alwast’s exhibition continues his interests in the possibilities of painting by interrogating its relationship to digital media and drawing. At the heart of Alwast’s recent works are ideas related to translation and the interface between virtual tendencies in the material practice of painting and painterly conventions in media practices. Translation is not only a formal device for Alwast but becomes a vehicle for a range of personal and political meanings related to immigration, social fragmentation and the desire for origin and presence. All works in the exhibition are identified by the artist as either painting or drawing and resist simple catergorisation of how painting might be defined; line and saturated colour shift into deep pictorial space, while dematerialised images land onto exposed linen surfaces.Item Embargo 1. Clanger (longitude, latitude, velocity)(UTS Art Gallery, 2018-05-01) Pailthorpe, BadenClanger, a solo exhibition by Baden Pailthorpe, explores the aesthetics of power through data, bodies and technology. In an environment that is both physical and virtual, Clanger pairs the statistical tracking of AFL player performance with the emotional intensities of the crowd. Using anonymous player and crowd data captured during the 2017 AFL Round 23 Swans v Carlton game, Clanger re-stages the drama and flow of a match in its entirety. Pailthorpe moves the game from the field to the virtual plane, rendering both players and the crowd as data-borne creations caught in a deeply emotional, cultural and aesthetic tradition. In statistical terms, the word ‘Clanger’ refers to a turnover or a silly mistake made by a player in an AFL match. The criteria for each player’s usefulness is defined wholly by the data they generate during the game— AFL players are tracked using micro wearable units that include GPS and accelerometers. The amount of data generated from these devices in a given game is immense; every movement is tracked, stored and interpreted in an effort to understand performance, mitigate injury and measure value. By adopting the vernaculars of sport and gaming, the artist creates an immersive environment that emphasises the role of experience in the propagation of labour, culture, and ideas. A new 36-channel video work re-articulates the match using the two team’s GPS data, while a single-channel video work on the opposing end of the gallery/field renders the crowd via audio data captured at the game. A soundtrack by composer James Brown accompanies this work. By pairing the compelling languages of creative practice with the statistics of player performance, Pailthorpe’s Clanger demonstrates that data becomes information only by interpretation. Clanger results from Pailthorpe’s Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) 2017 Synapse Artist Residency with UTS Sport and Exercise Science and professor Aaron Coutts. This exhibition of Greg Daly's ceramics examines his over 40 years as a maker. Works are drawn from Daly's own collection covering his development of forms, platters, vases and bowls. Some works never have been exhibited before. These pots are used as a canvas for Daly's distinctive glazes and surfaces, incorporating gold and silver leaf, lustres of different types, enamels and acid etching. Recent pieces in the exhibition feature his new lustre glaze work relating to atmospheric light.Item Embargo 645 hands, 1350 fathoms 26deg 14' 37" S 111deg 13' 03" E(Fremantle Arts Centre, 2017-09-21) Mayo, RebeccaThis work was made during a residency at Geraldton in November 2011 (organized through Fremantle Arts Centre and the City of Geraldton-Greenough). 19 November 2011 marked the 70th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran in WW2. In 2007 wrecks of both vessels were located at the position and depth referred to in the title of this work. Also in 2007, my father, uncle and I were among several hundred family members who travelled to the site for a memorial service. (My paternal grandfather was one of the 645 crew lost.) This work, made up of images I photographed over the site of the sea grave in 2007 and later transferred to paper, uses the Geraldton sun in a slow and meditative process involving cyanotype chemicals, the west coast location and a pacing between sunshine and darkness.
